A synonym is a word that means either exactly the same as, or very nearly the same as, another word in the same language. For example, “close” is a synonym of “shut”.
This essential book of synonyms has been created to specifically help children studying for the 11+ and SATs exams and will be beneficial to all children in Key stage 2 & 3.
Many children struggle matching synonyms. They often choose a word that is related in some way to the main word but it is not in fact a word that means the same or nearly the same. For example if the main word was “close” they may choose “door” because you close a door and therefore they must be similar meaning words. A vital part of our use of the English language is based around having knowledge and understanding of a variety of words and their meanings and working through this book will help to expand vocabulary.
